National Merit Scholarship Scheme: Empowering Academic Excellence
Scope:
The National Merit Scholarship Scheme extends scholarships based on senior secondary examination results. Each year, 82,000 fresh scholarships are granted, with an equitable distribution of 41,000 for boys and 41,000 for girls. These scholarships support graduate/postgraduate studies in colleges, universities, and professional courses, including Medical and Engineering.
Eligibility:
To qualify, students must rank above the 80th percentile of successful candidates in their respective stream for a specific Board of Examination in class XII of the 10+2 pattern or its equivalent. Eligible candidates should not fall within the creamy layer, as defined by the Department of Personnel and Training in their Notification No. 36012/22/93-Estt. (SCT), dated 8.11.93 (Annexure IV), and subsequent modifications outlined in their OM No. 36033/3/2004-Estt. (Res), dated 9th March 2004 (Annexure V), subject to further modifications. Students pursuing regular courses (excluding correspondence or distance modes) in recognized educational institutions and not availing themselves of any other scholarship scheme are eligible. This inclusivity applies to all student categories, encompassing both 'general' and 'reserved' classifications.
